The Crucible: Summary


The Crucible, written by Aurther Miller, is a play that takes place
in the 1690's during the Salem Witch Trials. The entire community is
living in fear while Auther Miller tries to express the conflicts between
three people. Mary Warren, whose entire personality is turned around
throughout the play, John Proctor, who has to decide between the
importance of his family and his own name, Revernd Hale has the terrible
ordeal of having to carry out his job while doing what is right.

At the beginning of the play Mary Warren is seen as a very shy girl
who will never speak her mind. As the play continues and she is
influenced by Abigail, she begins to express her self and freely open up

a deep secret inside of him. He seems
like any other citizen in the community except he has had an affair with
Abigail and he is afraid abigail is trying to kill his wife to get him.
Proctor weighs all parts of this conflict and decides that he must not
make another mistake, so he admits to witchcraft and goes to the death.

Reverend Hale is the person who initiates the problems, at first he
believes that there actually are witches and he is carrying out the wishes
of GOD himself. Reverend Hale just wanted to do what is right for his
community but it tragically ended with the deaths of many innocent people.
Soon Reverend Hale began to see that, and tried his best to correct the
problem.

Aurther Miller used this book to describe the trouble that one town
can go through when a controversy like this occurs. Not only do the
people of this small town have to work their own problems, they also have
to live in fear, fearing that someone would accuse them of ...
