The Mumbai massacre, the Wal-Mart stampede, piracy on the high seas, and the recession: so much had happened on the week of Thanksgiving, 2008. The question is, “Do you know the current events?” If you asked my generation, you’d be surprised to find that they don’t know much. They were all probably too busy eating turkey, watching football, texting friends, or shopping. Now, I can understand that Thanksgiving is a time for family, but surely people have time to check their email or watch TV over the holidays. According to reports published in Kenya, the Somali pirates have collected more than $150 million in ransom money over the past 12 months. There are entire towns in Somalia that now depend on revenues from pirates in order to support their villages. Somali pirates have hijacked some 40 ships this year, and are currently holding about 15 ships along with their crews, including a giant Saudi oil tanker. This tanker was actually just recently released after the ransom was paid.
On November 26, 2008 at 10:30 P.M., the city of Mumbai, India was brutally attacked. The ongoing fight lasted almost 60 agonizing hours. Terrorists attacked ten locations, killing about 180 people and wounding over 300.
