The Darkness in the Beauty

According to the Webster Dictionary, vulnerable means “1: capable of being wounded: susceptible to wounds 2: open to attack 3: liable to increase penalties in contract bridge” (814). In William Wordsworth’s poem The Prelude, he describes a very odd way how people can be vulnerable to nature. One can be vulnerable to nature because it is a mystery, it is very powerful and dangerous, and it can not be controlled by a human.

and dangerous. Nature is powerful because of what it can bring. Nature is dangerous because no one knows what to expect out of it. Nature is life long and has a mind of its own. Many times the human civilization can see nature as being a massive beautiful thing. Indeed nature is beautiful, but the beauty of nature has a side of darkness. In the middle of the poem the speaker uses bold, dark, and grim words to describe that nature is an all powerful being.

“When from behind that craggy steep till then
The horizon’s bound a huge peak, black and huge,
As if with voluntary power instinct
Upreared its head. I struck and struck again,
And growing still the stature the grim shape
Towered up between me and the stars, and still,
For it seemed, with purpose of its own
And measured motion like a living thing
Strode after me” (21- 28).
