The Differences In Fathers


The simple word father can conjure up many images and emotions. A father can be a warm and joyful memory, or a dark and dismal one. Two poets confront these memories in Judith Ortiz Cofers poem "My father in the Navy: A Childhood Memory" and in the poem by Theodore Roethke "My Papa's Waltz". The two poets write about their fathers, and their childhood experiences with them. The two poems both focus on the subject of a father, but have significant differences with how and what each conveys to the reader. Judith Cofers poem relays a message or explanation of the awkward relationship she had with her father. She is explaining to us that her farther was more of a symbol, rather than a caring ...

to express their opinions. These differences allow us as readers to understand the authors intent and main idea of each poem.
The first obvious difference in each poem is the gender of the speaker. This difference may be reflected in the opinions and body of each poem. Sons have different experiences with a father than daughters do with their fathers. Sons and fathers most commonly share a much closer bond than fathers and daughters. This relationship may have had some bearing on the opinions and feeling of each speaker. Cofers removed relationship with her father may have been due to that lack of this gender bond. In turn Roethke may have had a more positive remembrance of his father due to the fact that he was a male.
Another similarity in each poem is the mentioning of a father in the title. We are shown the subject of the poems in the first two words of each title. In poem by Cofer "My Father..." and in the Roethke poem "My Papa's...” The word choice in each title is different ...

joyful and happy. This title leaves plenty to the imagination of the reader. This title immediately lets us imagine a man dancing, laughing, and enjoying himself. This creates a much more personal and human feel for Roethke’s father. The word waltz brings to mind joyous occasions, parties and festivals. It transcends a certain warmth to the reader, a similar warmth shared between father and son.
Another similarity is that both speakers are adults assuming a child's point of view. Each poet describes events in their childhood in order to express their emotions and feelings. A difference in each poet’s approach to telling this memory is to whom he or she is writing the poems. Cofer is ...
