The Emerald Forest is a 1985 ecological adventure film by director John Boorman that is loosely based on a true story. It tells a Tarzan like story about an American engineer who is building a huge dam in the middle of the great Amazon jungle; the abduction of his seven-year-old son an Indian tribe of the; the dogged quest of the father to find his son, and the son's growing up and integration into a life far removed from the modern world. The story-line, however, is just an excuse for the director to put across his message about how the modern civilization is destroying the ancient ways of life as well as disturbing the ecological balance that sustains our world. been due to the fact that the movie was made in the 1980s before 'environmentalism' became a fashion and the subsequent crude attempts by the movie world to cash in on the fad. The film, mercifully, does not contain any moralizing speeches and only a brief message appears at the end of the film, reminding viewers of the dangers of rainforest destruction. This subtlety enhances the effectiveness of the message of the film.
The director, John Boorman appropriately chose his teenage son Charley to play Tommy, the American engineer (Bill Markham)'s son-one of the lead roles in the film. Apart from giving a powerful performance as a young man who adopts a culture poles apart from the one in which he was born, his green eyes and innocent looks aptly symbolize the innocent beauty of the Amazon rain forest beauty.
