Stephen Crane carefully chose and described the setting of The Pace of Youth to appropriately develop the themes of realism and youth within the short story. Crane extensively uses boisterous and realistic imagery to depict the sunny seaside carnival. Initially the seaside is described in a realistic manner; the sound of "booming ... surf [and] cries of bathers ..." and the description of the horizon of how the "vista of sand and sea and sky ... drew to a mystic point far away in the northward" (Crane). The sense of realism continues when "the electric lights ... made a broad band of tremoring light, extending parallel to the sea ... [while] a wind ... [blew in gusts] people unable to hear the music glanced up at the pavilion and were reassured upon beholding the distant leader still gesticulating and bobbing ... " (Crane).
