Michael Ondaatje’s The English Patient tells a story of how four different individuals lives come together at the end of World War II. There is a sense of mystery as the four strangers lived together in an abandoned Italian villa, gradually revealing their identities through a series of recollections. Throughout the novel, the past and present are constantly intertwined, and the focus of the story shifted from one character to another. This historical fiction, written in the style of post-modernism, embodies detailed description of both present and past actions, thoughts and conversation between characters in the villa.
