The cell membrane divides the interior of cells from the outside environment. The cell membrane consists of a lipid bilayer, including cholesterols that sit between the phospholipids to maintain their fluidity at different temperatures. The purpose of the cell membrane is to hold together the cell and protect it from the outside environment.
