The Great Gatsby: An American Tragedy

The American Dream was based on the assumption that each person, no matter what his origins, could succeed in life on the sole basis of his or her own skill and effort. The dream was embodied in the idea of the self made man. F. Scott Fitzgerald, in the Great Gatsby, embodies a very specific impression of glamour and appeal in a “perfect” yet shallow, upper class society. He uses one of the main characters, Jay Gatsby, to give a true definition of the American Dream. Jay Gatsby is a character after acquiring the American Dream, but in order to get this happiness Gatsby must reach into the past and relive an old dream; motivated by wealth and power, but ultimately, fails to achieve success. ...

Gatsby doesn’t mind though, blinded by the hope of getting Daisy’s attention by throwing big parties in a means she might show up. His lavish parties show the social circle with which he is trying to run; that by if he achieves this standard of living, high class, maybe Daisy will leave her husband, Tom, and come back to him.
Gatsby is determined to marry Daisy after returning from the war, he is blind to her shallow, cowardly nature. He is unable to see the corruption which lies beyond her physical beauty, charming manner and playful banter. And that she is incapable of leaving her abusive husband, Tom, and committing herself to Gatsby despite his scarifies. Daisy is not worthy of the pedestal on which she is placed. Since she is hallow at the core, but so is his dream which is based on a brief flirtation, nothing more.
