The Conflicts with Love and Money

In the "The Great Gatsby", by F. Scott Fitzgerald, money is one of the most important things in the world. Daisy, Jordan, and Myrtle lust for money. The men of novel, Gatsby, Nick, and Tom, all have spent their lives building up wealth and status to impress and to attract the women they are with. The three couples in the Great Gatsby have issues determining the difference between real love and the love of wealth.

together, and do really like each other. Nick states "I enjoyed looking at her" (Page 15). In the end of the novel we see that, for Jordan, money outshone love when we discover that she was engaged to a wealthier man.
Myrtle is married to a man named George Wilson, who is poor, she is not happy with him or their marriage. Myrtle has an affair with Tom Buchanan; she loves him because he is a rich and powerful man. One encounter with Tom "She smiled slowly and walking through her husband as if he wore a ghost shook hands with Tom, looking him flush in the eye" (Page 30). Again, wealth and status are far more important to Myrtle than finding true love or receiving the love her husband George has to offer.
The women in this novel are driven away from men because of what's lacking from their wallets, and attracted to others because of their full wallets. The men all try to acquire wealth and status to gain wives. Money has caused both good and bad things, but during the 20's if ...
