When he questions Gatsby about his life, and is astounded by the achievements he has attained his wife is caught on impulse to open a bottle of whiskey. “Open the whiskey, Tom’, she ordered, ‘and I’ll make you a mint julep. Then you won’t seem so stupid to yourself….Look at the mint!” She tries to convince her husband to drink away his ignorant behavior, because intoxication, here, is a sign of humility and understanding. And Tom knows that, which is why he refuses and continues to question Gatsby. In a sense intoxication makes them less corrupted, they see things for what they really are. In a party Nick only sees people that are wealthy and have their nose in the air, but once he has a couple of drinks he realizes that they too, are people, clumsy, with a sense of humor, and hope. ...
