buying things on credit and freely spending money on every luxury imaginable. Jay Gatsby was an extravagant man. "His bedroom was the simplest room of all- except where the dresser was garnished with a toilet set of pure dull gold."(Fitzgerald 91) Gatsby lived in an enormous house in West Egg. Gatsby was a courteous and caring man, that hosted lavish parties at his house. "On week-ends his Rolls-Royce became an omnibus bearing parties to and from the city between nine in the morning and long past midnight."(Fitzgerald 39) This is also when they passed the prohibition law.
Prohibition was the 18th Amendment, this meant that no one in the United States could legally buy, sell, or make alcohol. However, people commonly known as bootleggers, would smuggle in alcohol from other countries.
