At a certain point in life, everyone has dealt with making mistakes, bad judgments or doing something that has hurt another person. At times our guilty mind can become overbearing and causes us to feel overwhelmed with thoughts and emotions. The feeling of regret usually leads to a guilty conscience which is usually wallowed in for a long amount of time. The Two poems “Bird on the Wire” by Leonard Cohen and “Guilty Conscious” by Richard Phoenix are similar mainly in their subject manner and the way they conjure different feelings also the style and presentation of the poem. The person becomes remorseful because of all the things they’ve done, unable to oversee their emotions which is based on the person they’ve hurt in the past: “Like a beast with his horn, I have torn everyone who reached out for me” (Phoenix). They are continuously trying their hardest to receive forgiveness but their own conscience will not let then break away. The person is always at risk with life, second guessing themselves and continuously having trouble completing tasks due to admonition which acts as a reminder of the untruthful things they’ve done before. This poem is similar to “Guilty Conscious” by Richard Phoenix due to the subject matter of feeling guilty and not aware of avoidance when it comes to being constantly reminded of the things they’ve done: “Condemned by the burdens that run deep, a fault line of emotions sworn to keep”.
