The History Of Basketball


Basketball was a sport that was invented by Dr. Naismith to provide
indoor exercise and competitions for the students between the end of the
football season and the beginning of the baseball season. Basketball is the
one sport whose exact origin is definitely known. The Springfield College
gym class needed a new game to keep them busy. They tried many other games,
exercises, and calisthenics to quench their desire to compete. Nothing
worked for all new games were too rough. Dr. Naismith was hired to remedy
the problem. He made many changes to the gym class including; no more
calisthen¬ics. He just wanted to play a game that everyone could enjoy. Dr

There were many early changes in the sport of basketball to keep
the game safe. A quickly abolished rule was the use of a cage encircling
the court to keep the ball from landing among fans. A one-and-one free-
throw rule is added to award a bonus shot after each foul. The result is a
soaring increase in scoring averages and shooting percentages. Players were
going to the free-throw line too often from the abundance of fouls which
resulted in drawn out games and bored fans. In an attempt to reduce fouls
and the incentive foul, certain fouls were changed into violations which
resulted in loss of posses¬sion instead of free-throws. A later rule
awarded the extra free-throw (one-and-one) only after a team acquired six
