Bilbo Baggins did not appreciate all the dwarves dropping by his house unannounced. He knew when they appeared something was about to change.
Bilbo did now want to go on the trip at all. He did not want to be the burglar, but he went along any way. In the book it took him a little while to step in as a hero and burglar. One of the ways he was a hero was waking up, noticing the goblins, and yelling. He gave time for Gandalf to kill some of the goblins and to be able to get away and follow them. dwarves and some went into the direction of the voice. With the spiders confusion the dwarves huddled in a big group and threw rocks at them. When they were running away the dwarves were sick and could not get away fast enough. So Bilbo told them "Go on! Go on!" he shouted. "I will do the stinging" (Page 142). He darted backwards and forwards, slashing his knife at spider-threads, hacking at their legs, and stabbing at their bodies. They then became scared and dared not to come very near anymore.
