The Holocaust

The Holocaust. These two words bring to mind an image that will never be forgotten. These words also remind us that future genocide must be stopped in every way possible. At the hands of the Nazis, eleven million people had to suffer and face death at a time when they didn’t think they would. Of the eleven million killed during this tragic time, only six million of them were of Jewish descent. Holocaust.
One of the first major factors that helped to start the Holocaust was prejudice. Most Germans believed that their race was superior compared to the Jews. The Jews, to them, were a parasitic race that ‘lived off of’ the other races and weakened them. Therefore, destroying all Jews was a way of preserving Germany, and to not do so was unpatriotic. The solution to the problem of prejudice is education. The belief that everyone is equal must be instilled in children at an early age for it to really take effect.
The second factor that played a role was dictatorship. Germany became a dictatorship since the majority of Germany’s population was prejudicial and the freedom was washed away from its citizens. No longer was there freedom of speech, press, or assembly. By inflicting terror and fear into the minds of the Germans, Hitler was able to do as he pleased.
