Orwell uses a variety of literary devices in the language he uses in Nineteen Eighty Four in order to convey a sense of rebellion from the people in the novel in contrast to the tyrannical nature of their government. In the first chapter, when Winston is beginning to write a diary, he reflects upon whom he is writing the diary for; "for the future, for the unborn" as he recognises the power that the government have to erase all memory of him and his thoughts. Despite this, Orwell stresses the fact that the importance of Winston's diary is not the words he writes but the act itself when describing his writing as a "stream of rubbish".

Further into the chapter, Orwell uses mimetic language to illustrate the style of Winston's handwriting, explaining that his pen "slid voluptuously over the smooth paper, printing in large neat capitals" which suggests that when he writes what he is really thinking it comes easily to him and he feels a sense of freedom that he has been deprived of for so long due to the harsh nature of Big Brother and his rules. He begins to protest against the party through the use of his diary, writing "DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER" repeatedly, which shows how strongly he feels about the constraints set upon him and his people and his need to communicate the feelings he has been forced to harbour inside himself for so long.
