The Influence of Magwitch and Estella

The novel, Great Expectations is about a boy named Pip who wants to become a gentleman so that he can marry Estella, a beautiful girl who is of the royal class. However, it is difficult for Pip to become a gentleman because he does not have any family who is in the upper class. During Pip’s journey to become a gentleman, he encounters many different people who alter his thoughts on the world around him. The two characters who modify his opinions the most are Magwitch and Estella.

According to Magwitch, all that is important is character. Money is nice to have; however, if Pip does not have character the money is pointless. Although, when Pip is around Estella, he only thinks about how he wishes he were more of a gentleman.
Another area of Pip’s thoughts that Magwitch and Estella affect are his opinions on friendship. Like with money, Magwitch and Estella affect Pip in very different ways. Magwitch teaches Pip that just because someone is dirty and disgusting on the outside, it does not necessarily mean that they are not kind on the inside. For example, on the outside, Magwitch is a filthy disgusting criminal. When Pip first realizes Magwitch is his benefactor, Pip is appalled. “The imaginary student pursued by the misshapen creature he had impiously made, was not more wretched than I, pursued by the creature who had made me, and recoiling from him with a stronger repulsion, the more he admired me and the fonder he was of me” (337.)
