In ancient Greece, Odysseus of Ithaca was considered great because he was the only mortal to use his mind to its potential. In the Odyssey, this also gained him the favor of the gods because he survived by using his mind when many mortals would have perished. Before he sailed to fight in the Trojan War, Odysseus was already a respected leader in Greece. His plans and machinations helped the Greeks triumph in the War, particularly with his brilliant strategy leveraging the Trojan Horse. with his sense of touch, Odysseus quickly gathered his men and instructed them to hang on to the belly of the sheep as they passed out the entrance. By his cunning and resourcefulness, Odysseus used the wine as a stunner, the pole as a weapon, and the sheep as a getaway vehicle.
To free his men from her evil spell, Odysseus (with a little help from Hermes) manipulated the witch Circe in her palace. Circe and her potion had turned the men of Odysseus into various sorts of animals. Odysseus traveled to Circe’s palace to find them and when he was almost there, Hermes came to him from the sky and told him to eat a poisonous plant that would repel the transforming effects of Circe’s potion. Giving thanks to Hermes and eating the plant, Odysseus came to Circe’s palace and drank her potion to no effect. Then he threatened to kill her if she didn’t return his men to their original state.
