The Internal Combustion Engine - Online Term Paper

The Internal Combustion Engine

I have chosen to do my physics report on the internal-combustion engine. I will mention the four-stroke cycle, the components of an engine, the ignition system, the carburetor system and how an engine works.
The four-stroke cycle obviously has four strokes, which consists of the intake stroke, the compression stroke, the power stroke and the exhaust stroke. The intake stroke occurs when the air/fuel mixture enters the cylinder through a one way valve which is housed in the cylinder head (the cylinder head also houses the lifters and valve springs which help control the opening and closing of the valve). That is the first stroke. The second is the compression stroke. This is when the ...

exhaust manifold and exhaust tubes and the leads out of the car. At 2200 RPM the entire four-stroke cycle is completed 18 times per second in each cylinder. The term V8 L6 and V6 refer to the number and configuration of engines cylinders. While the V8 is more popular for hot-rodding and for fast sports cars. The in-line six is common found in older cars that weren't that powerful. Inline fours and V6's are usually used in newer cars (V8, V10 and V12 are also used in newer cars, but they are meant for more power and for speed). Flat fours are found mostly in Volkswagen Beatles. Flat sixes are found mostly in Porsches and Corvairs. Chrysler out of many engines, had invented a new engine in the early sixties, it was the slant six. It is the same as the inline six but is slanted rather than being vertical.
A typical crankshaft is made up of a series of main journals, which hold the crank in the block and a series of rod journals that are connected to the connecting rods and ...

cam to complete the four-stroke cycle. It is very important that the camshaft be installed in proper relationship to the crankshaft so that the cam opens the valves at the correct time during the pistons strokes. Custom turning the relationship of the cam timing to the crank timing is called degreeing the cam. The timing gears are usually marked with dots that you line up in order to install the cam straight up or without degreeing the cam.
With the cam in the block, the lifters (also called tappets or cam flowers) can be installed. Lifters are machined cylindrical pieces of metal that ride on the cam lobes. There are three different types of lifters. There is a hydraulic lifter that ...
