The Joy Luck Club

Amy Tan’s novel, The Joy Luck Club, portrays that no matter the generation, parents know best. The daughters ignore the advice of their experienced mothers. Their failure to acknowledge their mother’s guidance causes miscommunication within the families. One daughter, June, does not accept her mother’s advice until she is gone.

June disregards her mother’s plan for her. Suyuan Woo, June’s mother, wants her to “be [a] prodigy” (132) by “[playing] piano” (136). June does not want to become a prodigy. Lindo says “[it] is [not] [easy] to start and stop” (171). Waverly does not obey her mother. She never plays chess anymore. Waverly believes Lindo’s ideas and teachings only apply to Chinese culture.

An-mei Hsu neglects Popo’s advice for her. An-mei grows up with the idea that “her mother [is] a ghost” (42) and that saying her name is equivalent to “[spitting] on [her] fathers grave” (43). Popo, An-mei’s grandmother, teaches her these ideas. An-mei never grows up with a real mother. Popo tells An-mei “[not] [to] follow [her] [mother]” (218), she says that An-mei will “[be] [influenced] [by] evil” (218). An-mei ignores Popo. She follows her mother, only to watch her be raped and commit suicide. An-mei does not believe Popo’s advice is very logical.
