Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle was written in 1906, the turn of the early twentieth century and was mainly in the stockyards of Chicago. When writing this book, Sinclair’s goals were to show the world how the labor was for low income families especially foreign families coming to America to have a better life and to unravel the disgusting ways the meatpacking companies were before FDA approved meats were enforced.
Sinclair wanted to show readers the many problems that occurred in low income families that dealt with minimum wage paying jobs with crazy labor regulations, especially if one was foreign and could not speak English. In the ...

Business slowed down at the meat industry and many accidents occurred like having to pay for a lawyer because of the constant mindset that he and his family were being conned out of money, paying for household items, the rent, and small odd and end things that took Jurgis by surprise. After Jonas’ and Kristoforas’ death, Jurgis becoming injured with his ankle and falling ill, Ona becoming ill and dying from child birth with Jurgis’ baby son, and Marija losing her job at the canning factory, money began to run low and the family was tossed into the streets. These were the things that happened to low income families at the beginning of the century.
