Often, the story of “Bloody Mary” is the first story of supernatural form that is told to many individuals as young children. When I was in 3rd grade, a group of friends and I got together to have a sleepover; naturally, we all went to my friend’s basement and started telling scary stories. One of my friends told me that if I went into the bathroom without any lights and said “Bloody Mary” three times in front of a mirror, a bloody figure would appear. The telling of this story goes back so many generations.

There are many other variations to the story. One says that Mary was a witch who was executed a hundred years ago for attempting black Magic. Another version says that Mary was a woman who died in a car accident in which her face was severely mutilated. Some stories identify Mary as a woman murdered on her wedding night, a mother who killed her children, some tragic or horrific figure that appears in a mirror upon being summoned. In some cases it must be a certain day such as Halloween or Friday the Thirteenth in order for the ritual to work.
