The Man in the Grey Flannel Suit

The Man in a Grey Flannel Suit is a film adaptation of the 1955 best-selling novel of the same name by Sloan Wilson. The 20th Century Fox film was directed by Nunnally Johnson (producer: Darryl F. Zanuck) and starred Gregory Peck, Jennifer Jones, Fredric March, Ann Harding and Lee J. Cobb in the leading roles. It was released on March 30, 1956 and did fairly well at the box office. It won the best director's award at the Cannes Film Festival as a competing film. The film runs for 153 minutes, which is unusually long by today's as well the standards of the 1950s when it was made and released. (Erickson, Review in "All Movie Guide")

in the film, is involved in a similar every day struggle to provide a good home for his family but can barely make ends meet. He applies for a better job within his company but is soon confronted with the pressure that the position brings. The film is an accurate portrayal of the corporate culture of the 1950s America. The theme of the film also tackles 'the loss of innocence' in a post-War world where the heroics and innocence of the war years are replaced by the realities of the corporate culture focused on making money and everyday compromises leading to unhappiness and marital tensions. It is also a story of redemption in hardship and love as reflected in Tom Roth's confrontation with his past (his torrid wartime affair with and an Italian girl and his illegitimate child left behind) and his attempts to cope with a failing marriage while looking for more meaning and financial security in his job.
