Throughout the novel, The Mayor of Casterbridge, it seems that the so-called “minor” characters play the major roles and critical parts in the story. Two of who are of the most importance are the furmity woman and Joshua Jopp.
The furmity woman is arguably one of the most important and influential characters in the novel. Although the furmity woman is the least seen of the characters in the story , she is the most felt in her meager three appearances. The person that is most affected by these appearances is Michael Henchard. was leading a renewed life and was doing well. This time the furmity woman made her presence felt was in court one day when she was charged with misconduct for urinating in the street. Henchard happened to be filling in for someone else as judge that day. When Henchard charge her, the furmity woman told the court room about Henchard selling his wife and also said that he wasn’t fit to judge her when he was no better. Because of this, Henchard lost some of his glory in the eyes of the townspeople.
The third and final time the furmity woman shows up, she makes it known about the letters that Joshua Jopp had. When Lucetta’s letters were read, it was discovered that Lucetta wrote the letters and that they were letters that spoke of Lucetta’s love for Henchard. With this being known, Henchard and Lucetta were paraded around the town on a “skimmity ride.” The shock and embarrassment of this parade killed Lucetta.
