The Messenger by Mark Zusak shows us that `everyone can live beyond what they're capable of'. As the protagonist of the novel, Ed Kennedy helps those in need and is challenged to do things beyond his capability. Ed is portrayed as the epitome of ordinariness throughout the novel, who has no meaning to his life and nothing to live for with no goals, ambitions or plans for the future. stingy pessimist throughout the text and it's not until Ed shows what he is capable of that we see a different side to him. In one moment though, all of this changed. Ed decides to ask Marv for money and find out why Marv never spends it. When Ed finds out everything about Marv and his secret, he finally understands. `Yes, it all makes sense. The pathetic car. The obsessive watchfulness and abhorrent vigilance with money.' Marv tells Ed about why Suzanne Boyd, the girl that Marv is in love with, left. All of Marv's actions now had a crucial story to tell, that he's been harbouring money for his secret daughter, a daughter he had when he was still in high school. Being able to move out of the don't-ask-don't-tell comfort zone Ed and Marv had been in, Ed matures. Ed convinces Marv to go see her in Auburn, the town she moved to. Ed drives Marv to the house, and then father comes out and beats Marv up. Ed tells the man that at least Marv cares about the kid and is saving money for her. ...
