In reading “The Metamorphosis” Kafka clearly portrays the complexity and irony of the roles of man within society. Gregor was a producer, and his physical metamorphosis, which saw him transform from the working man into a non-functioning and expendable vermin, ultimately rendered him useless in all aspects of his life. The theme of dehumanization is blatantly evident as characterized by his isolation. The reader becomes aware that during the course of his predicament, his sister, Gretta undergoes a transformation. It is almost as though Gregor’s transmutation is Gretta’s metamorphosis in the reverse.

produce, he is disregarded as a social burden, unable to sustain his role in the system. His mind however, his intentions remained that of his old self. But on account of his inabilities his family is revolted by him, and feeling immensely burdened, they sentence him to a life of isolation.
In the meantime, Gregor’s sister Gretta embarks on her own metamorphosis and shift in role. Her change commences with the new responsibility of caring for Gregor and escalates to the point where she begins to assert herself with her parents and ultimately becomes a decision maker. She becomes empowered in this process, and simultaneously becomes less of an emotionally driven nurturer. She cares less and less of his well-being as she transforms. She becomes liberated only to become dehumanized once again. She becomes callous, and self righteous. This is evident when she makes the ultimate decision to get rid of Gregor.
