Moliere created a variety of characters in his play, Misanthrope. Alceste, because of his brutal honesty evokes empathy within me. The other character of course, would be Celimene because she would be known as a player in today's society. Oronte, another character, has his feelings hurt because of Alceste's brutal honesty when he critiqued Oronte's work. Of the characters I have listed and those that are not listed you can see a specific relevance between their society and ours in regard to social behavior.

Alceste always is at her disposal.
Celimene's flirtatious actions have all of the men bidding for her attention. When Alceste catches a letter Celimene has written to Oronte, Alceste confronts her angrily. Celimene implies that it would have been written for a woman. Then Celimene tells Alceste that she is tired of his ways and will not tolerate his jealousy. Alceste tries to be strong, but he realizes he is losing her. The more she acts like the relationship does not matter, the more Alceste tries to make it work. This behavior is prevalent in today's society. For example, I have a friend that confronted his wife about her flirtatious behavior. She threatened to leave him, and like Alceste my friend apologized for being insecure. She continues to be a flirt.
Finally, Oronte asks Alceste to critique some of his writings and to give an honest opinion Alceste tries to avoid doing this, but Oronte keeps after him until Alceste has no choice. When the favor is done, and the ...
