One of the contradictions for the radical environmental movement is that while it seeks to differentiate itself from the conditions of society, it also seeks to gain converts and to generate interest by means of publicity and media attention, both of which are functions of and tools of the society itself. In any case, publicity can be a two-edged sword. It can attract converts and generate enthusiasm, but it can also alienate and create an image that may not be what the environmentalists want to create. Many of the international groups, including Greenpeace, have become very well institutionalized and powerful, and they have changed their approach over time with the recognition that certain kinds of stunts that might gain publicity could also be misconstrued by the public.
