The Monkey Wrench Gang

In the novel The Monkey Wrench Gang, Edward Abbey tells the story of four environmentalists who take extreme action to prevent industrial development from destroying the canyons and rivers of a desert area near the Colorado River. The actions the four environmentalists take would be considered extreme, and monkeywrenching (as this sort of action is known) is a form of political protest that veers sharply into illegality and that includes the destruction of the property of others as a way of protecting some policy or action.
