After becoming chancellor of Germany in 1933, his Nazi government gained power and began promoting their ideas. Under the command of Adolf Hitler, the Nazi Party ruled Germany from 1933 to 1945. The first concentration camp created by the Nazi party took the name Dachau. The camp soon became a death camp where thousands of innocent Jews died from starvation, overwork, disease, or execution. In addition to Jews, the camp’s prisoners included artists, intellectuals, gypsies, and the physically and mentally handicapped.
