Chapter 1-5 Summary

In the first two chapters we dive right in the novel, the narrator, Dr. Sheppard tells us of Mrs. Ferrars death. He explains he was called early in the morning to her house, but when he arrived she was already dead. When he returns home from Mrs. Ferrars we meet his sister, Caroline, the reader can quickly realize by the Dr's and Caroline's conversation, about Mrs. Ferrars death, that Caroline is very nosey. Come to find out Caroline already knew of Mrs. Ferrars death from Annie, a parlour maid, who heard it from a milkman. talking quietly the day before. Suddenly he is face to face with Roger Ackroyd. Mr. Ackroyd invites the doctor to dinner at 7:30. One of the doctor's last patients is Miss Russel, one of Rogers' housekeepers, she has knee pains and asks the Doctor about cocaine addiction.
At lunch with Caroline the Doctor shares the news that he will be having dinner at Roger's house. Caroline shares the gossip that Ralph is staying at the Three Boars and is engaged to Flora Ackroyd. Roger doesn't know he is in town. Dr. Sheppard goes to Three Boars to speak with Ralph after learning about the conversation Caroline overheard in the woods. Ralph seems distraught and tells the doctor he is in with the devil and he doesn't want to involve anyone else.
