The Necklace Analysis

The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant

In the story The Necklace it involves a couple, the Loisels, from the 1880's. Maupassant portrays the flaw vanity, which many humans obtain. In more cases women are at fault. It is like they have to compete with one another and be above each other. The Loisels were not above many of their friends, for as they were of a lower standard, or class. The wife, Mathilde, was the one who had the problem of being inferior and not equal to her friends. She acted out of jealousy of her friends and ironically her poverty came from her "necessity" of having a richer appearance.
