Our need for horror and the thrill of fear feeds our unconsciousness. As a society we obsess on murder, death, and destruction. The media sensationalizes these events and those individuals who are the cause. Take for example the long followed lives of Charles Manson or Jeffery Dalhmer, or the intense coverage of the unibomber and the mass suicides of Heaven’s Gate. Our culture also has a need to recreate the scenes of death and destruction. For example, in the late 1890’s, multi-murderer H.H. Holmes’ “castle” was opened as a tourist attraction. At approximately the same time mines and railroad tunnels were also opened for “accident thrills” for the public. Even our amusement park ...

An example of a film that works with the shower scene in Psycho is obviously displayed in de Palma’s Dressed to Kill. The scene that correlates is when Peter’s mother is killed the elevator by Liz. This scene is similar to Psycho because as in Psycho when Kate has her revelation and decides to return the money, and showers as a way to “clean” her once evil thoughts, Peter’s mother also has some sort of revelation when she realizes she has been infected with a venereal disease. She then decides to discontinue her affair with the psychologist. Her attempt to “clean” her ways was interrupted with the blood bath inflicted on her by Liz. Both Kate and Peter’s mother were killed in a place where they were vulnerable and left with no where to run. In both scenes we see the after effect of blood from the cuts, but not the actual inflicted injuries.
Examples of films where the shower scene is worked against are seen in many of the splatter films of the 80’s and 90’s. ...
