The word 'occult' is a word in very common usage these days. However, it is also a word that is misused, and has become a word to define the "black arts". As a consequence, it tends to instill revulsion and fear in the minds of the vast majority of people. It comes from the Latin word 'occultus', which in it's very basic translation means 'hidden'. The modern meaning of the word is often translated incorrectly in that it is used as a term for secret knowledge or hidden arts, in the sense of the meaning that the knowledge be kept hidden. Depending on ones point of view, the 'occult' can be anything you want: evil, spirit energy studying, etc.

There are many who wonder if the occult is evil or bad. It is only because it is the unknown. Take Satanism for example. If you actually read up on it and get past all the stereotypes, then it is just another religion that nobody really considers. The occult is just like that, but without the official religion part. "The study of sciences unknown to the majority" is basically what defines it, in short terms. All these thoughts about the occult being like this (evil/bad) raise so many fear issues with the world that makes it harder to understand it more. I think partly major religions such as the Catholic Church are to blame for these rulings of what is evil or good.
