The Old Man and the Seas Hero

The main character of the book, Santiago, wrinkled from the passing of time, would be considered an unsuccessful fisherman at times. He went weeks even months without a single fish, “He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish.” (Hemingway 65). In his life he had many ups and downs but lately he has had mostly downs. If his fishing was not bad enough, his assets were little to none, “The sail was patched with flour sacks and furled; it looked like the flag of permanent defeat” (Hemingway 121).
