The Old Man and the Sea recounts an epic three-day struggle between a strongly willed fisherman and a giant marlin said to be the largest catch of his long career. Santiago, the fisherman, has lost his luck and has gone eighty-four days without catching any fish. His young apprentice, Manolin, was cast to another boat by his parents because they had told the boy "the old man was now definitely and finally salao" (9), which is the worst form of unlucky.
