In the Pacific Northwest, we have many amazing plants and animals. Washington, Oregon and California are a few fortunate states to have many trees and animals that thrive here in the Northwest. Washington’s state tree is the Western Hemlock, other trees include the Douglas fir, Western red cedar, and Ponderosa pine. Oregons state tree is the Douglas Fir, other local trees include Bigleaf maple, Sitka spruce and Red alder. California's state tree is the Redwood, these trees are known for reaching heights above 250 feet near the coast of California, and Southern Oregon. areas of Oregon, they keep insect populations under control. These birds are in danger due to many predators, coyotes, bobcats and badgers prey on these birds. We also have tufted puffins and blue herons, these birds can be found along the coastline. The red-breasted sapsucker is one of the most fascinating birds that can only be found in the Pacific Northwest. It taps holes into trees to catch insects for food. Washington’s state bird is the American Goldfinch, while the state fish is the Steelhead Trout. Oregon’s state bird is the Western Meadowlark, while the state fish is the Chinook Salmon. California’s state bird is the Valley Quail, while the state fish is the Golden Trout. A very familiar sight to people living in the Pacific Northwest is the Orca whale. This whale is not only an amazing symbol of our state and culture, but also a cherished animal by many people.
