In many ways those efforts were null and void because we still are not equal, racial discrimination still exists. Black people still have one hand tied behind our back when we attempt to pursue what is rightfully ours.
He further uses the sense of smell to express his disgust with the dream. For instance, the smell of rotten meat can make you sick to your stomach. The lack of progress achieved by black people as whole is also enough to make you sick to your stomach. Acts performed against blacks in the past still effects us today. Therefore, the progress we should have attained has not happened hence, the thought of that stinks like the smell of rotten meat.
