By the totalitarian society , Oceania, being in a constant state of war, their economy never goes down for lack of demand on a supply. Furthermore, because the society is in a war the citizens assume that things like “the electric current was (being) cut off during the daylight hours,”3 arises from the state of war . Because the citizens make this assumptions, they do not revolt against their government for poor living conditions like they did in the French Revolution. The people are then at peace with their government because of the war situation and therefore ‘WAR IS PEACE’. The second slogan ‘FREEDOM IS SLAVERY,’ relates to the complete control the totalitarian government of Oceania has on its people. Suspense is introduced in Part 1 because the main character, Winston Smith, does not in believe in whatever the government says and leads the reader to believe that he is going to rebel against the society.
