The Prison
When I was offered the job of vending hostess at the Tomoka Correctional Institute, I really did not know what I was getting myself into. I thought it may not be any harder than the work I had done for the past 9 years.
My first day at he prison was one that I will never forget. The first thing I saw was all the razor wire covering the fence. It it coiled all around the entire prison. As I entered, I had to go through the metal detector just like in the airports. That was easy. As, I , entered the next part, It was strange. As far as I was concerned, the day the divorce was final, that was the day I stopped being Mrs. Tucker. But, I was told that was what I had to do.
There were other rules I was told about, such as inmates were not allowed to handle money at all. so, I had gave money as a refund, I was to never give any to an inmate. I was, to keep my stockdoor locked at all times. Which was an unusual rule because there were times that I was within 2 feet of the door but, it had to be locked anyway. On my way home that day, I fought back the tears. I was so intimated by what I saw there, that I did not want to return at all.
My boss told me he wanted me to go and sit and observe for the next two days. As I went back on Saturday, I returned with alot of fear. Fear of what could happen, fear of the unknown. As I sat and observed, I noticed how “normal” everyone was there. They appeared to be at ease. They correctional officers seemed “ normal.” The visitors seem “normal” . As I watched ...

With that realization , I seen that in order for me to do that, I had to be ME. Which, would mean to go against the first two rules I was told when I first entered the prison just two days before. As a reminder: I was not to talk to inmates, and I was to be addressed as Mrs. Tucker.
After listening to the sermon, I left the Chapel, feeling refreshed and sure of myself again. I knew from that moment on, I was going to be ME. Everyone, would address me as Carol. Plain and simple. and I would talk to the inmates, whenever, they talked to me.
