It runs right in the mix with “give it your best” and “good try.” All seemingly patronizing statements used to help some with defeat. Unfortunately, these statements stopped being truly significant a long time ago. Nowadays, its win- or you’re nothing, especially amongst the modern fans and media. The thrill of winning and the despair of losing has reached too great of an extent. Of course you should be happy when your team wins, and it’s ok to be upset (within reason) when your favorite team loses. when they lose, and drink and fight in the parking lot when they win. They scrutinize today’s modern athlete, the LeBron James’, Cam Newton’s, Tiger Woods’ or Michael Phelps’ even. Performing in the sport is not enough; they need to be role models in their everyday lives. Of course people should act respectable, to a certain standard. But, being a professional athlete does not mean you should be held to a higher moral standard than the rest of society. (Are you saying you don’t have any skeletons in your closet? Really? I don’t believe you.) We need to appreciate their talents in the sport, that is all. People might say that things are different, times have changed, the professional athlete used to be someone to look up to. False. Ever hear of Ty Cobb? Wilt Chamberlain? Babe Ruth even.
