The Red Badge Of Courage: Henry Fleming



Life can be described as a constant process of making and learning
from mistakes; likewise, Henry Fleming, from Stephen Crane's The Red Badge
of Courage, makes a mistake and must learn from it. This novel takes place
in April of 1863, before the battle of Chancellorsville. Henry Fleming, the
main character, has enrolled in the U.S. Army during the Civil War. Henry
faces a problem in this novel that he must overcome: the guilt of running
away from his first battle. Although he could have chosen a different
solution, Henry Fleming chooses to act bravely to rid himself of the guilt
he experiences when he runs away.

run. In addition, as Henry's regiment moves closer to the actual
battlefields, soldiers running from the battle render information to the
regiment. Henry's thoughts change after hearing the words of the fleeing
soldiers. "He resolved to get a view of it, and then, he thought he might
very likely run better than the best of them" (54). Henry assures himself
that he will run when he faces his first battle. Henry's worst fears come
true when he encounters the enemy for the first time. Henry fights well
amidst the enemy's first charge, yet fear consumes him when they charge a
second time. "He, too, threw down his gun and fled" (69). After Henry runs,
he begins to feel the guilt that plagues him; in addition, other soldiers
magnify his guilt. The tattered soldier asks him, "Where yeh hit ol' boy"
(89)? Instead of answering the question, Henry leaves the tattered soldier
and refuses to admit his feelings of guilt. Throughout the rest of the
novel, Henry tries to eliminate his guilty ...
