In Hardy’s “The Return of the Native”, Mrs. Yeobright and Clym Yeobright share a relationship filled with destruction and havoc. Hardy presents Clym and Mrs. Yeobright as two very similar characters. Both are extremely judgmental and narrow minded. They both share the same objective throughout the novel, control of Clym’s life. Clym struggles with Mrs. Yeobright, but final submits to her.

Mrs. Yeobright is quick to pass judgment on others, including Clym.

Clym, like Mrs. Yeobright, is also quick to judge. He is a man of ideals with no real sense of love in his heart. After hearing of the circumstances surrounding his mother’s death, he quickly places all guilt on Eustacia: “‘ You shut the door –you looked out of the window upon her –you had a man in the house with you –you sent her away to die’”(Hardy 254). Clym immediately wishes punishment on Eustacia: “‘May all murderesses get the torment they deserve’”(Hardy 251).
