The chorus can play an integral and unique role in plays, serving the function of a collective omniscient character, a reflection of the audience's conscience, the character(s)'s conscience, or as a subtle method for the playwright to communicate with the audience. As an omniscient character the chorus can permit insight into characters' minds or into the general plot. The chorus can provide foreshadowing or hinting. When the chorus reflects the conscience of either the audience or the one or more of the characters, it serves a subtler service. and solemnly counsels Creon: "The man hath gone, O King, with dread prophecies. And, since the hair on this head, once dark, hath been white, I know that he hath never been a false prophet to our city." To this Creon responds humbly, "I, too, know it well, and am troubled in soul." Creon agrees to take the wise counsel and provide Polyneices a proper burial. Without the interjections of the chorus, Creon would still waver about his moral conundrums. Later when the Chorus sings the praises of Bacchus and Thebes: "O Bacchus, dweller in Thebes," the purpose is less to counsel specific characters as it is to provide narrative flow and a seemingly purposeless but definitely significant role.
