The Rugmaker

Focus question: Discuss the impact of war on Najaf and his family.

Living with war changes how Najaf thinks. It also changes how he acts. Simple metaphor tells us that Najaf develops the actions of a wild animal. For example, while hiding in the cupboard at Ashraf's house, Najaf and Gassem eat "in the way that wild animals eat, with our ears pricked for the sound of our enemies". Later, as he cycles around the countryside trying to get away from the Taliban, Najaf is "always as wary as a wild animal", easily awaken by a "stone rolling down a slope half a kilometer away", or by "the crack of a twig falling from a tree"
