and yet she defends that with “one’s pretty lively when ruined” (20), which contradicts with the melancholy tone of the poem, to some extent.
The recall of the conversation between the two girls comes to a climax when the narrator describes her fantasies as being like the other girl, she says, “I wish I had feathers…delicate face and could strut about Town” (21,22). Very quickly her excitement is suppressed by “My dear – a raw country girl, such as you be, cannot quite expect that” (23,24), and then a reasoning of being ruined is given, and in desperate tone the narrator is told that she doesn’t want to be in that situation.
There is a chronological set of all the stanzas; the narrator opens with an introduction, and then tries to convince the reader that a certain condition is in favor of, by going from a physical to an emotional description.
