The Scarlet Letter: Sin Affects



In the novel “The Scarlet Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hawthorne focuses on Hester Prynne’s sin. Hester Prynne commits adultery with Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale and bares a child named Pearl. Hester is judged guilty by the townspeople and is forced to wear a letter A on her chest. She does not tell the town that Dimmesdale is the father of Pearl. Hester suffers persecution for her sin and is shunned by the townspeople. Her punishment caused a dramatic change in her personality. She became more kind and charitable by helping the poor and the sick. Sin is the focal point of the novel and affects the lives of Hester, Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth.

She was suffering because she was not strong enough to come out and tell the town that Dimmesdale was the father. It is stated in the novel that she “was patient, -a martyr, indeed, -but she forbore to pray for her enemies; lest, in spite of her forgiving aspirations, the words of the blessing should stubbornly twist themselves into a curse” (Twentieth Century Interpretations of The Scarlet Letter Pg.108). Hester feels that she has not sinned against the community, and therefore that the community has no right to inflict penalties. The only result, then, of the community’s action is to isolate Hester from her neighbors in spirit as well as in person. Dimmesdale’s sin has brought Hester’s appearance even lower to the town because she has not told them, who the father is.
