The Schutzstaffel (S.S.) During WWII

Of all the German organizations during World War II, the S.S. is by far the most notorious. When the average person conjures up an image of a Nazi, they imagine a soldier dressed in a frightening, impeccable uniform decorated with swastikas, totting a gun, terrorizing everyone, and destroying anything remotely Jewish with fervor. This is what the Third Reich called the S.S.
In 1925, Adolf Hitler formed his own personal bodyguard called the Schutzstaffel (S.S.). Four years later Hitler appointed Heinrich Himmler as the leader of the S.S. Himmler, the National Commander of the S.S., was a chicken farmer by trade. He was considered a fanatic even by Nazi standards. He spent most of his time standing in judgment of his fellow countrymen, "according to whether they were hard or soft on what he called 'the Jewish question'." (Constable, 23)
The S.S. was an intricate military and political organization comprised of three separate branches. The three branches were all connected but distinctive in their objectives and functions.
The Allgemeine S.S. or General S.S. was the main branch of the organization. It served an administrative and political role. The second branch was the Totenkopfverbande S.S. or Death's Head Organization. The S.S. Death's Head Units were put in charge of Germany's Concentration Camps. In December, 1940 the third branch, Waffen S.S. or Armed S.S. was established. This new army grew rapidly and within six months grew to over 150,000 men.
