The Sexual Politics of Meat Analysis

With "The Sexual Politics of Meat," Carol J. Adams takes us a step beyond hippie admonishments against meat eating and examines the symbolic connotations of animal consumption. Meat is metaphor, meat consumption a political choice representing dominance, violation, and violence. Patriarchy affirms the slaughter of animals as an exclusively male domain: men are the hunters, women the gatherers. Men, deemed more worthy and needy of animal protein, consume more meat than their female counterparts in a given society. Throughout time and culture, "people with power have always eaten meat." and honey. Male giants eat human flesh; cannibalism is another level of mammal consumption. The Bible instructs priests to be in charge of the meat; women are not permitted to touch or taste. Modern cookbooks segregate the barbeque sections for their male readers, because grilling meat is the male domain. Women shall content themselves with side dishes and "lighter" fare. Meat also denotes deeper social taboos: meat is partially or entirely forbidden for female consumption. Therefore, meat is elevated to a place of prestige. Patterns of food distribution reflect patterns of sexual power distribution. Meat demands respect; women do not.
The connection between meat and masculinity is in large part a passive-aggressive one, subtly contributing to subjugation. Men become "belligerent" over meat and look with disdain on meals prepared without meat. Such meals are relegated to women, the weaker sex.
