These nests were used for young or as a resting place for groups of
adult shrews.
Compared to most types of shrews, the least shrew is sociable, and
several may be kept together in captivity without conflict. They sleep
together and help eachother to some degree in digging tunnels and finding
food. One nest found in December in Texas contained a dozen shrews that
seemed to be staying there for the winter; another examined near
Nacogdoches was occupied by at over 31 shrews.
These small shrews are active all hours of the day, but the most
activity comes at night. They are difficult animals to trap except in
winter when the supply of food is low, then they respond more to bait. In
Texas, they tend to concentrate in favorable areas in winter and to expand
over wider areas when conditions are better. The fact that barn owls
capture and eat large numbers of them controls the shrew population. The
